DESCRIPTION
Mendocino-Lake Community College District is currently accepting applications for two (2) Nursing Instructors.

This is a full-time, tenure-track position offering a 10-month contract (August-May). The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the two. The annual work year includes 164 instructional days and eleven (110 professional development/flex days. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, as well as travel to, and instruction at off-campus centers within the District and other medical facilities.

This full-time nursing instructor position reports to the Interim Executive Dean of Nursing. The successful candidate will teach courses from the Registered Nursing Program curriculum which may include nursing fundamentals, beginning and advanced med-surg nursing, leadership, seminar, pharmacology, obstetric/pediatric nursing, and psychiatric nursing. At this time the program has a special need for faculty with medical-surgical, geriatric, pediatric, and/or psychiatric/mental health nursing expertise.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary: Faculty are compensated in accordance to the negotiated Salary Schedule and is dependent on education and experience. The annual salary offered at $60,237-$86,420.

Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on FTE teaching and or applicable work experience. Instructors will receive year for year credit on the salary schedule for teaching experience and one year credit to two years of related work experience.

Benefits: With no monthly premium contribution from the faculty member, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective the first of the month following hire date.

Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn ten (10) days of sick leave per year.

Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The successful candidate will support student success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments:

Teaching

  • Instructs the full range of courses in the Registered Nursing Program curriculum which may include nursing fundamentals, beginning and advanced med-surg nursing, leadership, seminar, pharmacology, obstetric/pediatric nursing, and psychiatric nursing. At this time the program has a special need for faculty with medical-surgical, geriatric, pediatric, and/or psychiatric/mental health nursing expertise.
  • Educates in varied environments including the skills lab, simulation lab, clinical setting, online (using Canvas), and/or lecture environment for first year and/or second year nursing students.
  • Maintains clinical competency with current practice and content expertise per the BRN requirements. Direct patient care experience must be in the designated nursing area (medical-surgical, obstetric, children, psychiatric/mental health, or geriatric) that the faculty will be assigned to teach.
  • Arranges clinical experiences complying with agency requirements;
  • Conducts classes and finals as included in the schedule of classes; prepares classroom presentations, student activities, and assignments; teaches class hours; evaluates student's performance based on quizzes, comprehensive examinations, finals and/or other assignments appropriate to the course outline; teaches courses in accordance with the description published in the catalog, the course outline, and the schedule of classes; prepares a syllabus for each course and distributes it to students at the first class meeting and/or electronically;
  • Reports prepared and on time for classes;
  • Posts and maintains student contact hours;
  • Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and teaching practices; and
  • Prepares and submits accurate and timely student reports.

Department
  • Attends department meetings;
  • Participates in program development and revision;
  • Participates in curriculum development, review, modification and deletion;
  • Develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline;
  • Participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations;
  • Provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline; and
  • Collaborates with the campus centers concerning classes in the discipline.

Institution
  • Reports prepared and on time for meetings; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled;
  • Completes required flex hours for professional development purposes; serves on college committees;
  • May supervise student workers in the discipline;
  • Participates in the development of an annual budget for the discipline, submits purchase orders, maintains related records; participates in the completion of program review;
  • Participates in the processes of shared governance;
  • Secures and properly stores equipment assigned to discipline; conducts a periodic inventory of equipment;
  • Participates in activities to create and promote career pathways, including articulation with local high schools and four-year colleges; and
  • Actively engages with program advisory committee.



QUALIFICATIONS
From California Board of Registered Nursing Faculty Qualifications and Changes Explanation of CCR 1425:

  • Must possess and retain a current, clear and active license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Master's or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education, or administration. Degree coursework must be completed prior to August 15, 2021.
  • Direct patient care experience within the previous five years in the nursing area to which he or she is assigned, which can be met by:
  • One year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated area; or
  • One academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency; and
  • Completion of at least one year's experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years' experience teaching in pre- or post-licensure registered nursing programs
  • One year's experience as an administrator with validated performance of administrative responsibilities consistent with section 420h of the BRN regulations.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Knowledge of:

Nursing research, evidence-based practice, clinical simulation, online teaching, advanced physical assessment, medication calculations and administration, high-risk medical-surgical, pediatric, and mental health disorders, lab interpretation, nursing leadership, clinical instruction, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making.

Ability to:

Effectively instruct assigned courses using a variety of techniques, including online teaching with Canvas and Zoom and student training using high-fidelity simulators; evaluate and develop curriculum and instructional materials; update course materials to reflect current nursing practice; assess student academic progress; communicate effectively with students and hospital staff regarding student expectations, course requirements, evaluation procedures and other program requirements; serve as a liaison with community health care facilities and staff; follow faculty mandates of the CA Board of Registered Nursing; develop course schedules; stay current in the subject area through continued professional development and active involvement in professional organizations and activities; evaluate faculty; maintain records; prepare reports; work cooperatively and effectively with others; demonstrate respect for the rights and needs of students; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; work variable locations and hours.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (Prior to beginning employment)

Must be fingerprinted through DOJ and FBI and have background clearance; and must take a TB test (once hired and every four years thereafter).
Within 6 months of employment, must complete required District trainings such as Sexual Harassment Prevention.
Healthcare worker requirements including current CPR training, health exams, and immunizations, as required by clinical locations.
