Departmental Overview

The University Health Services (UHS) serves the campus as a comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited primary medical care, counseling and psychological services and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. UHS provides on-campus medical and mental health care and coordinates off campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. Departments serving students include general medical, specialty and urgent care clinics, counseling and psychological services, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology and health promotion. In addition, the UHS administers a major medical insurance plan, the Student Health Insurance Plan. UHS provides services to students Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 6:00PM and on weekends.

Responsibilities
  • Patient Care: Maintains an active clinical practice, incorporating all the job responsibilities of the Nurse Practitioner III.
  • Functions as a resource for consultation on complex or difficult patient cases.
  • Maintains a high standard of patient care and personnel performance by being aware of the clinical standards defined by Clinical Protocols and the Quality Assurance Program, and gives those standards special attention.
  • Ensures that nursing services and clinical protocols, policies and procedures are followed by nursing personnel.
  • Uses knowledge of growth and development principles to anticipate care needs of patients from adolescents to adults.
  • Evaluates nursing problem situations related to patients, families, physicians or coordination with other clinic units and helps to initiate and evaluate action taken.

Supervision:
  • Supervises nurse practitioners working in Clinical Services Units, including Primary & Urgent Care.
  • Maintains patient care objectives, clinical protocols, and NP policies and procedures.
  • Implements HR-related actions associated with hiring, development and discipline of staff members according to campus policies and procedures.
  • Recommends plans for personnel development and training needs of staff by being aware of quality assurance indicators and incident report investigations that point out inadequacies of staff performance.
  • Promotes safety of staff and patients through continuous monitoring of assigned clinics for compliance with infection control programs, and Health & Safety policies and procedures as appropriate.

Clinical Administration:
  • Serves on Clinical Services Management Team and/or Primary Care Operations Team.
  • Participates in developing, implementing, administering and evaluating the organizational and clinical programs.
  • Assists the Medical Director and Quality Manager(s) in addressing service-wide issues relating to quality of patient care.
  • Is a member of Clinical Case Review Committee and Quality Improvement Committee.
  • May lead and/or participate in other teams and projects per strategic direction and operational needs.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum five years practice in outpatient medicine;
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise and healthcare leadership with skills and abilities to manage and lead senior professional staff
  • High level communication, diplomacy and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated history of developing constructive and caring professional relationships, consistent with UHS statement of Patient's Rights and Responsibilities, characterized by: respect for the patient as an individual regardless of cultural, racial/ethnic background or sexual orientation; recognition of their rights as a client; concern for the problems or questions that brought their to health care; understanding of the social and environmental context of health on the college campus.
  • Solid foundation of and/or demonstrated ability to learn HR-related policies and programs of the campus.
  • Knowledge of or has the ability to quickly learn campus goals and objectives related to providing highly effective health care services and programs to faculty, students and staff members
  • Excellent organizational skills: Must be able to establish goals and objectives for the NP/PA practice, and complete assigned projects according to operational timeline with minimal direction.
  • Requires expert facility with knowledge of electronic/medical records systems and computer literacy.

Education/Training:
  • Must be a certified Nurse Practitioner in California with an active license and furnishing number.
  • Maintains certification as an Adult/Family Practice NP.
  • Maintains current California RN license, furnishing number, DEA license, basic CPR certification.
  • Must have CPR certification.
  • Must be a licensed registered nurse in California.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing and nurse practitioner program, and in possession of the legal requirements for the practice of a Nurse Practitioner in California.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $103,000.00 - $208,200.00.

Other Information

The minimum posting duration of this position is 14 calendar days. The department will not initiate the application review process prior to July 1, 2021.

Employment is contingent on successful completion of: Background Check, Acceptable Medical Evaluation that includes infectious disease surveillance and proof of current required vaccinations or immunity levels, and successful credentials verification (if applicable).

This is a variable (80-100% FTE), Career position.

Berkeley does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities.
