Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at UCSC Student Health Services is recruiting for two full-time, 12-month Multicultural Mental Health Psychotherapists. 

While full-time, 12-month employment is preferred, CAPS is willing to discuss alternate percentages of time, based on applicant preference.  If less than 12 months is preferred,  the position can contain regularly scheduled unpaid, non-work periods in the summer during which the incumbent remains an employee and retains health benefits, but is not at work.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services (SHS) strives to create a caring and supportive environment to assist students in improving their physical and emotional well-being to aid in their academic success. We are a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological services to diverse students on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Comprising a variety of Clinical Services, including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Laboratory, and X-ray, SHS also has an onsite retail pharmacy, offering both prescriptive pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter products. Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs. Student Health Services employs approximately 120 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. We welcome staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Multicultural Mental Health Licensed Psychotherapist reports to the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and is assigned duties by the Director as specified herein. The Licensed Psychotherapist will provide high quality clinical services; community psychology/outreach and consultation services; and may provide supervision/training of doctoral interns and post-doctoral fellows. In discharging these duties, the Licensed Psychotherapist is expected to be keenly sensitive to issues of gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, socio-economic status, etc. and to be skilled with techniques for counseling students with diverse backgrounds.  
The Licensed Psychotherapist's activities are performed within the limits of standards and ethical principles of their licensure board as well as applicable legal mandates for mental health professionals in the State of California.  

This position requires demonstrated expertise in multicultural and diversity issues in clinical and outreach services with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) identified students.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Salary Information: $83,883.24 - $106,391.30 / year if working 12 months Or $6,990.27 to $8,865.94 / month based on time worked.  Salary commensurate with years of licensed experience as well as specialized skills and qualifications.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Direct Clinical Service
  • Provides brief counseling and psychotherapy with undergraduate and graduate students (individuals and couples) with a broad range of psychological problems, with a focus on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) identified students
  • Provides crisis assessment and crisis intervention
  • Provides case management and referral services
  • Conducts group counseling, psychoeducational groups, and drop-in groups
  • Consults with students, faculty, and staff regarding student concerns and student distress that affect the developmental and psychological well-being of students in the university community
  • Consults and collaborates with psychiatrists, physicians, campus entities (i.e. Slug Support, Disability Resource Center, and others) and off-campus mental health professionals, social agencies, and community resources to meet the mental health needs of students
  • Determines the need for other professional interventions and refers as necessary
  • All licensed staff will provide consultation for the After-Hours Crisis Service as scheduled 

35% - Indirect Service
  • Functions as a community psychotherapist and a consultant to faculty, staff, residential life staff, and other units on campus regarding collaboration and program development for outreach and training to enhance the mental health and psychological well-being of students and the campus community
  • Participates regularly in a cooperative and professional manner in efforts to maintain and upgrade the quality of service of the CAPS unit by participating in CAPS committees and workgroups and by collaborating with other licensed psychotherapists, college administrators, staff, and faculty in program development, committee work, and consultation
  • Promotes a safe and healthy workplace and effectively responds to injuries that occur
  • Other duties, as assigned

15% - Direct Outreach Service     
  • Develops and implements culturally responsive and multiculturally sensitive outreach programs to BIPOC students.
  • Functions as a liaison to campus organizations serving BIPOC students.
  • Other duties, as assigned.  
     

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid California licensure in good standing in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Demonstrated multicultural experience, skills and expertise providing culturally competent and trauma informed clinical services to a BIPOC client population
  • Demonstrated clinical experience with individuals using a brief therapy model
  • Demonstrated strong clinical and crisis management skills, including ability to work with high acuity students with complex mental health needs 
  • Experience facilitating psychotherapy and psycho-educational groups
  • Experience designing and implementing multiculturally sensitive outreach programs and psychoeducational workshops
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues in the delivery of psychological services
  • Demonstrated expertise with developmental and mental health issues of late adolescence
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and to effectively collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to be an effective team member, and evidence of professional behavior
  • Strong planning and organizational skills

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Counseling experience in a college/university setting
  • Experience and expertise working with a specialty group such as a Muslim identified population, international students, or trans identified students
  • Able to conduct psychotherapy in a language other than English

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Valid California licensure, in good standing in Social Work, or Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete both a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check prior to formal offer of employment.
  • Ability to work occasional non-traditional hours
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
  • Selected Candidate will be required to take HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility) training within 30 days of hire.
  • Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview.
