Job Description

The Inpatient Psychiatric Unit Clinical Nurse Educator is a specialized nursing practice that facilitates the professional role development and growth of nurses and other healthcare personnel along the continuum from novice to expert. The Clinical Nurse Educator is expected to comply with CHA Service Standards for welcoming patients.

Job Purpose

The qualified candidate will function in the intertwined roles of change agent, mentor, facilitator of learning, leader, advocate for the clinical nurse educator specialty, champion of scientific inquiry, and partner for role transitions drawing on adult learning theories, experience, knowledge and evidence-based practice to transform clinical nursing practice.

Qualifications

Developing and facilitating DMH required programming of Restraint Reduction, Trauma Informed Care, Self Safety Techniques and Restraints required; AHA Instructor BLS strongly preferred. Experienced in meeting the core competency standards of nursing professional development practice as set forth by the Association for Nursing Professional Development required. Examples of the Nursing Professional Development standards include:

1.) Assessment: collecting data and information related to educational needs; 2.) Identification of issues and trends: analyzes issues, trends and supporting data to determine the educational needs of the nurse; 3.) Outcome Identification: develops expected measurable outcomes that reflect competence, learning and practice change; 4.) Planning: prepares content reflective of current evidence using adult learning theory to meet a target audience that is in accordance with accrediting agency requirements, 5.) Facilitates a positive learning environment to meet the gaps between academia and clinical practice, consultation to influence plans, enhance the abilities of others and effect positive nursing practice changes; 6.) Evaluation: using reliable and relevant methods and instruments to measure processes and outcomes, revises learning activities and disseminates the evaluation results of learning activities; 7.) Champions scientific inquiry, generates new knowledge and integrates evidence into clinical practice to enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice; 8.) Acts as a change agent through the development of programs to educate staff and implementing change strategies; 9) Provide leadership in identification of nursing practice competency development, academic partnerships, and influencing decision making bodies to maintain and improve quality nursing care; 10.) Mentorship and advance the profession of nursing through fostering professional growth, lifelong learning and participate in committee work.

Applicants should possess excellent communication, assessment, documentation, interpersonal and technology skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritize as well as a commitment to work with a culturally diverse population

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current MA RN Licensure, MSN required
  • Certified ANCC in Nursing Professional Development strongly preferred
  • Current AHA certification in BLS, AHA Instructor BLS strongly preferred

Work Experience

Minimum of current 5 years Inpatient Psychiatric nursing experience required.

Advanced skills in psychiatric nursing practice including restraint reduction, clinical supervision, understanding antipsychotic medications, milieu management modalities – specifically with acutely psychotic and dual diagnosis patients across the lifespan, facilitating mutli-disciplinary group programming, managing aggressive patients requiring acute interventions, advanced assessment skills required.

Minimum of 5 years as an inpatient psychiatric nurse preceptor, clinical leader, charge nurse or educator with current evidence of developing, implementing, documenting and evaluating nursing education and competency programs required.
